Shotgun: This cultivar is by far our most consistent heavy bearer of large to extra large nuts. Has survived -37°F, (possible zone 4b) and shows no sign of injury at -30°F. This mother tree is flanked by Qing and Gideon for pollenizers. This variety was developed here at Red Fern Farm. It’s name comes from its placement in the row, 410 feet from the west edge of the field. Hardy to zone 5a. Since we collect from only one tree, the seed source is somewhat limited. Order early as we do sell out of Shotgun frequently.
We sell these trees as potted or bare-rooted. Potted trees are grown from seed each Spring and are available to leave the nursery when they have developed a good root system. Usually potted trees may leave the nursery by late June. Bare-rooted trees are grown in a special bed for maximum root development all summer. They are dug and bundled in late November for shipping the following April. We ship these trees in April while they are still dormant.
