These seedlings are the result of hand pollinating Szego flowers with pollen from QingSu cakins. These superior genetics and labor intensive process are part of the $15.00 price for each tree.
Szego: A complex hybrid bred by Mike Nave. Vigorous, fast growing, heavy bearer of XL nuts, cold-hardy and blight resistant. Received great reviews by Mike Gold of the Agroforestry Center of Missouri at the 2016 Chestnut Growers of American annual meeting. Hardy to zone 5b.
QingSu: A pure Chinese seedling of Qing pollinized by Auburn Super. This tree produced its first crop of 5 lbs of XXXL nuts when it was only 4’ tall (most trees produce their first handful of nuts when they are 6’-8’ tall). It has produced an extra-heavy crop of XXXL sized nuts every year since, without ever overbearing and producing small nuts. This tree is a real outlier for both nut size and productivity among Chinese chestnuts.
We sell these trees as potted or bare-rooted. Potted trees are grown from seed each Spring and are available to leave the nursery when they have developed a good root system. Usually potted trees may leave the nursery by late June. Bare-rooted trees are grown in a special bed for maximum root development all summer. They are dug and bundled in late November for shipping the following April. We ship these trees in April while they are still dormant.
Price for Bare-rooted, less than 24 inches tall (April only)
or Potted (available June – September at the farm)
